How to Use Social Media in Your Job Search

Social media is very powerful for building your personal network, but consider its usefulness to expand your professional network as well. While Facebook tends to be a more personal social media network, it can still be helpful to let your friendly connections know you’re in the market for a job. But no social media site is more useful in job hunting than LinkedIn. A LinkedIn profile provides a place to share your expertise, network and connect with industry professionals and hiring managers, and joins groups to help expand your network.

So how can you use LinkedIn in your job search? Here are a few quick tips:

Company Search: Searching for a company on LinkedIn is useful when you have a particular company in mind. Perhaps you’ve heard great things about them and you want to know what they have going on. If they have a company page, you can even follow their page to keep an eye out for job openings. Astra Solutions has a company page on LinkedIn.

Email: Send out a mass email to your LinkedIn connections to let them know you’re looking for a job. Be sure to only do this sparingly or it could be considered spam. Include a few details about the type of position you’re looking for and be sure to include multiple ways for people to contact you. Encourage your connections to share the information with their network.

Recommendations: Don’t be afraid to ask colleagues and past employers for recommendations, but only if you know they’ll be good. The more recommendations you have, the better.

Status Updates: Like Facebook, LinkedIn allows you to post status updates and “like” others’ updates. Post relevant information about your industry, links to your blog or portfolio, and interesting bits of information that show you’re on top of the latest industry news. Leave the personal stuff to Facebook. Treat LinkedIn like a workplace.

Make it Public: Make sure the public at large can see the basics of your profile, including your name, skills, recommendations, and brief work history. Keeping things private means you’re less likely to be contacted by an employer. Just be careful not to share any sensitive information.

Make the most of LinkedIn and you’re sure to find the perfect opportunity. Happy networking!
