Information Technology (IT) is a specialized field with a diverse and varied range of possible job opportunities. Many people choose to go into IT after working in another field, and for good reason. IT is a great field of work. Here are some reasons why we think IT is an excellent career choice.

Demand. IT is everywhere, in pretty much every industry. Everyone needs to stay connected and everyone needs systems that keep their business flowing smoothly. There is no lack for demand.

Opportunities. From programming, to project management, to network administration, the opportunities and niches in IT are vast and varied.

Flexibility. Contract jobs are plentiful and many IT professionals make a career from completing specialized contract jobs. This offers flexibility in location and pay, and allows you to control which companies you work for.

Pay. IT jobs pay well for highly skilled, well-trained people. While money isn’t the only important factor in choosing a career, the great pay and economic stability offered in the IT world is hard to beat.

Quick Resume Refresh Tips

Posted: October 29th, 2012 | Author: | Filed under: Tips and Advice | No Comments »

If it’s been a while since you’ve hunted for a job, your resume probably needs an update. Here are some things you can do to update it quickly and effectively.

Research your target job. Doing this can clue you in to keywords and phrases that should be included somewhere on your resume. Review as many job descriptions and postings as you can to get an idea of the hard and soft skills employers are looking for. Then make sure to highlight those skills on your resume. Don’t lie, but if you have the skill, include it!

Focus on your achievements. Be sure to state the detailed results of your job performance. You might include duties as well, but make sure you highlight how you achieve results. This will show employers that you’re valuable to your company.

Fill in the gaps. If you’re not currently working, take on side projects or work part time in your field. Find some way to gain relevant experience and fill in the employment gaps. If you need more help filling in the gaps, check out our previous blog article on filling in those pesky resume gaps.

Proofread. Clean things up and check out your formatting on more than one computer. Have a few friends check it for errors and phrasing. If you know anyone who is a hiring manager or a recruiter, have them take a look as well. You can also email it to Astra at hr@astra-solutions.com and we’ll take a look at it for you.

Make sure you include all your recent and relevant experience, and do a Google search for great resume examples for your field.

Keys to a Great Resume

Posted: October 17th, 2012 | Author: | Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments »

Resume writing is daunting, we know that. But there are some things you can do to make your resume better right now. Today. At Astra, we see a lot of resumes, and we are aware of what our hiring managers want to see on resumes. We’d like to offer some tips to help your resume shine.

1. Duties and Achievements. Don’t just list what you did from day-to-day at a job, but list your actual achievements. Use quantifiable examples to show how you increased productivity or profits. Give examples of your leadership abilities and show that you can think critically about problems.

2. Education. If you don’t have a degree, put your education at the bottom of your resume. In fact, unless you hold multiple degrees and certifications, you may still want to consider putting education at the bottom. Employers want to see your skills and experience. Unless the job you’re applying for specifically requires post-graduate degrees, consider putting it on the bottom.

3. Skills. Highlight them in an easy-to-understand way. Use a table or chart. If you have many skills relating to the job, put that skills list right near the job. If you feel your experience is more valuable, put the skill list under your experience.

4. Be flexible. Tailor your resume to the job description at hand. Use keywords that are listed in the job description so recruiters will catch them easily. Keep a working copy of your resume that you can edit for each job application. Even move sections around if you feel one employer is looking for experience more than skills, or vice versa.

If you’re ever unsure of your IT resume and you need a helping hand, send it to us and we’ll provide some feedback. hr@astra-solutions.com
